Cleaner, Greener, And Bloodier?

One of Mayor Dixon's biggest campaigns has been her Cleaner, Greener Baltimore Initiative. She has promoted new bike trails, talked about hybrid vehicles, started an anti-litter campaign, and tried to market herself as the cleaner/greener mayor of Baltimore. All the marketing has convinced a few people that I know that Baltimore is cleaner than it once was. Is there really a way to measure this though? I ran on the Druid Hill Park section of the Jones Falls Trail last week. It was quite a pleasant experience. I was going to write about the trail system and then I stumbled upon a disturbing story from the City Paper blog about an attack on the Gwynns Falls Trail. A group of ten to fifteen people tried to attack the author of the story while he was riding his bike! The author also provides a link to two other bike attack stories that I had never heard of. We may be a more bike friendly city but it appears that some citizens are ready to attack others just to get a bike. So while it is nice to talk about green initiatives, we need to keep in mind the serious crime problem that still permeates our society. We can not hide our real problems under green paint.
