The School System Should Sell Its North Avenue Headquarters

July 9, 11:52 PM

For about two years I have been saying that the school system should sell or lease its headquarters at North avenue.  The historic building is almost 100 years old and it is located on the edge of an area that is becoming trendy and much more safe to hang out in.  It probably is the school system's most valuable real estate holding.  The building could be used in a number of new ways.  It could end up as apartments, shops , offices, or something creative.   Instead of being a tax free entity it could generate tax revenues if it became privately owned.

School chief Andres Alonso recently announced the elimination of 310 central office jobs.  In theory a lot more could be eliminated (thus saving even more money) and the building could end up very empty.  Employees left working at the building could be moved to one of the many school owned buildings that sits mostly empty in other parts of Baltimore.  Imagine a school in a not so great area that has an entire wing empty. That wing could be turned in to offices.  The workers could add some stability to the area.

At least for now the school system is not taking my advice.  Instead of maximizing the value of its headquarters and generating money (that we tax payers will not have to pay any longer) to fund the system, more money is being poured in to the building to turn a part of it in to a school for 100 students on long-term suspension or expulsion

Andres Alonso is at least trying to be creative, but I think he really needs to go far outside of the box to come up with some revenue generating (and cost saving) ideas for the schools of Baltimore.

Most state workers in Utah are shifting to a four-day work week.  If Utah can try it why can't Maryland?  State workers are notoriously lazy and unproductive so why have them clog the roads an extra day of the week?  In theory the extra... Read More
