"City Council Special Committee on Property Tax Relief - first hearing on Thursday, September 11, 4 pm. City Hall. You are welcome to attend.
This new committee that I chair was created to examine long-term solutions to Baltimore's burdensome property tax rate. According to City Council President, Stephanie Rawlings, “This new Special Committee will lead our efforts in Baltimore to address this complex issue and turn thoughtful ideas and recommendations into concrete legislation." As the chair of this committee, I look forward to moving this incredibly important issue forward as I firmly believe we need to address our burdensome property tax rate now."
If you can not attend this meeting then please email Bill Cole at william.cole@baltimorecity.gov and share some property tax cutting ideas with him. In my opinion this is the biggest non-crime related issue we are going to have to deal with over the next 5 years. If we do not deal with it we are going to have a lot more people moving out of Baltimore and a lot less people moving in. On Friday I spoke to a perspective home owner who who told me that Baltimore's insanely high property taxes (double that of Baltimore County) were holding him back from buying. He was comfortable with the crime and grime but he refused to pay double what he would in the county to deal with Baltimore's extreme problems.
We need to make sure that this committee is not just a show. We need a plan to come out of this and we need to see a cut of some sort. This can not turn out to be another waste of time Dixon promotional tool like the Blue Ribbon Panel.
Here are some property tax ideas I came up with in 2007 when I ran for city council.
