In today's Baltimore Sun David Steele writes about how Baltimore needs a brand new full size arena so we we can have a shot at acquiring an NBA team. I have no idea where David Steele lives but I bet it is not in the city of Baltimore proper. Many neighborhoods are rotting away and are infested with drugs and empty houses. I would be happy to take Mr. Steele on a walking tour of the neighborhoods within walking distance of my Reservoir Hill house so he can see what we have to deal with every day. Tax payers can not afford to pay for a new arena for an NBA team that we will never get. If by some miracle (actually it would be a curse) we did get a team the people of Baltimore would not support it. This may be a city that that produces NBA talent but it is a region that does not give a darn about the NBA (and rightfully so).If the counties around Baltimore would like to pay for a new arena and new infrastructure for Baltimore City then go ahead and waste YOUR money. If some Billionaire would like to do the same thing then be my guest. Baltimore city needs to focus on lowering property taxes immediately if we ever wish to even get close to returning to our former glory. We need to take drastic actions in order to lower the property taxes but our leaders lie and say there is no fat to cut out of the bloated and wasteful city budget. Wasting money on an arena will only hurt us long term. Some people think that you need an NBA, NFL, or baseball team to be a "real city". Well Oklahoma City just took Seattle's old NBA team. Where would you rather live? Which city is the "real city"? |

Linden Bar and Liquors at the corner of North Avenue and Linden Avenue in Reservoir Hill has been a blight on the community for over 30 years. On April 17, 2008 after a two hour hearing the liquor board did not renew the license for this establishment. The original license expires on April 30th so by May 1st the store should be shut down. Now at the last minute the owner is attempting to delay and reverse the boards decision. Here is an email I just received that will give you some insight in to what it takes to get rid of an establishment that is blatantly in violation of numerous liquor laws pertaining to public safety and illegal narcotics sales. Feel free to show up at the courthouse located at 111 N. Calvert Street:Hello All! Just a half hour ago I had a conference call with Judge Cannon, Russell Neverdon (the liquor board appellate counsel) and Richard Bittner (attorney for the licensee) and there will be an emergency hearing in front of Judge Nance (not sure if that is his correct spelling) tomorrow morning at 11:30 am in Room 556 in the Circuit Court East Building to decide whether or not a stay should be granted to the licensee. If granted, he would be permitted to remain open while he appeals the liquor board’s decision. It is important that we show up and defend our position which is that we want this establishment closed as of May 1 per the Board’s decision. If you can, please attend the hearing.

It was announced today that instead of cutting our property taxes by a measly two cents that they will stay the same. About a month ago we were all told that the Mayor's budget was going to include a two cent cut. Looks like she just figured out that we are not going to be able to afford that. The funny thing is that state law dictates that we are entitled to a cut closer to 20 cents. The Mayor and elected officials conveniently find a way around this though. The Mayor created a blue ribbon panel to figure out how to lower our property taxes and this is the result of all that. NOTHING! There should have been a blue ribbon panel to figure out how to cut spending. I was at a public hearing at Poly to discuss the tax situation with the Blue Ribbon Tax Panel and we were specifically told we could not suggest any spending cuts. City dwellers have to pay over double the amount of property taxes that they do in Baltimore County. If you solely take in to account property taxes, safety, schools, and services there is absolutely no reason for a family to move to the City over Baltimore County. Assessments just doubled and tripled for many people. The City is raking in money because of this. Our leaders are still unable to get a grasp of basic math and figure out a way to cut spending so property taxes can be lowered and the City can be more affordable for current and future residents. You don't hear a lot about property taxes from our leaders. They like to worry about trans fats and building statues for dead horses. Jack Young says he is willing to keep property taxes at their current rate so we can keep the services that keep our kids out of trouble. What is he talking about? The "for the children" line is the biggest load of crap out there and almost all of our elected officials love to use it. While Jack and his buddies on City Council were voting to give themselves a raise the children he is so concerned about were out selling drugs on the 2400 block of Callow Avenue in Reservoir Hill. In fact they are there right now and the City is not doing a thing to stop them. Don't worry though because we are safe since it's illegal to cook with trans fats now. PS- I am adding a link to an examiner article that deals with this property tax issue so there is no doubt about who said what. |

I am just going to jump right in to things. In Baltimore we have a government that says it is for safe streets and against nuisances. For the last few weeks many dedicated people living in Reservoir Hill have spent a lot of time trying to get the liquor license removed from an establishment that has haunted the area for thirty years. Back in September this establishment was covered with political signs for every major candidate for Mayor and candidates for others positions. By allowing your name to be placed on something you are giving it your endorsement. Ever wonder why we can't seem to get rid of nuisance establishments? Check one out around Baltimore City election season and you will see why. There has been a lot of talk about change lately in the national media. In the Baltimore political system change is something that will only be attained when we stop electing members of the ruling junta that got us in to this situation long ago. There I said it. This blog is not going to be a pretty promo for Baltimore. I am not going to clean things up to make it seem like life is dandy here. I will name names. The time has finally come. |
