Police Involved Shooting In Reservoir Hill- Baltimore in Miniature

September 28, 11:58 PM

On Thursday police were in Reservoir Hill on patrol when they encountered a drug suspect in the Madison-Park North housing project. Madison-Park North is known as a drug haven in the area and many nearby neighbors want police to be around there more often. Well those neighbors got their wish but things got a little crazy Thursday morning.  A suspected drug dealer got in to a scuffle with a cop and reached for his gun. Another policeman shot the suspect.

Some Reservoir Hill residents took this news to be a good a sign. Police were getting out of their cars and going after drug dealers. Some residents of the housing project felt the police used too much force. You can check out this link from WJZ to hear a woman complain about excessive force. She does not allow the camera to show her face.

Situations like this one are common in Baltimore. On one hand we have frustrated neighbors who want to see police step up patrols and force, on the other hand we have residents who are closely intertwined with people in the drug trade who feel that the police are after them.   In my opinion this is a very clearcut situation. Those involved in the drug trade made a choice to be involved in the drug trade.  It is not a safe "industry".  The open air drug market culture has gotten out of control in some areas and residents have every right to expect police and elected officials to crack down on such illegal activity. For too long in Baltimore a few bad apples have been allowed to ruin blocks and neighborhoods.  To call the above incident "excessive force" only allows those bad apples to continue their destructive ways
