Although Memorial Day is not until May 30th, it is as we know “observed” on Monday May 26th therefore making the entire weekend a celebration. Due to extremely high gas prices these days, there will undoubtedly be less people driving out of town this weekend. However, we can’t forget those Memorial Day sales at the mall (right ladies?) or the infamous barbecue day this coming Monday. Many of us will be gathering together at a friend or family member’s backyard for some good times, relaxation, and a hardy generally outdoor-cooked meal. Having said that, I really enjoy the Food Network to pick up some new cooking tips. Therefore, I wanted to share with you some grilling ideas provided by the Food Network’s Bobby Flay for your Memorial Day celebration. He shares recipes about barbecuing chicken, beef, and pork so check them out by clicking here. ![]() And if you’re looking for a way to add some versatility to the usual lemonade or iced tea to your barbecue, check the Virtual Weber Bullet website for some interesting ways to “wash down” your meal so to speak. To really spice things up, I found a recipe for an Olive Garden Limoncello (a lemon-flavored liqueur) that I myself plan on trying. Yummm.... ![]() Ingredients
As for the reason for having the day off, let’s not forget to honor the men and women who died to serve our nation. Fort McHenry will be having a day-long remembrance on Monday May 26, 2008 including wreath-layings, speeches, and a flag display. Click here for more details. Just a footnote to my readers who are wondering why I am including information about a meal when I am the Outdoor Recreation Examiner: I thoroughly enjoy discussing food and cooking. Therefore, it seemed appropriate to me to discuss food ideas while many people will be sharing their Memorial Day meal by grilling outdoors.
