A 133 Year-Old Maryland Tradition: It's Preakness Time Again
POSTED May 14, 10:05 PM
Well yes it is certainly that time of year again: Preakness, arguably the biggest, best-known, and oldest tradition of Maryland. We are now in the midst of the whole Preakness celebration. Besides the long list of events: the concert series, Preakness parade, balloon festival, frog hop, and crab race (seriously?), the big grand finale is this weekend. This Saturday May 17th, 13 jockeys will race the 133rd Preakness on the symbolic Pimlico race course.

When thinking of the history behind the Pimlico course, it is truly impressive that the Preakness tradition has stood the test of time. The race course was built after Maryland’s governor of 1870, Oden Bowie, proposed the idea to hold a stake race in Baltimore. Pimlico today remains the 2nd oldest racetrack in the U.S. with Saratoga being the oldest.

Just think the race course used to welcome Baltimoreans riding in on their horse carriages, whereas it now welcomes people in their limousines and helicopters. Today, there is even a Miss Preakness! This year, 21 year-old Towson University student Maggie Wolfendale will hold that title representing Pimlico at all the Preakness activities.
