Happy Friday to all! So this Sunday is indeed the official day to honor the women who brought us into the world. Are you still deciding what to do for your mother? Well despite the gloomy weather we are supposed to have all day today and tomorrow, Sunday is supposed to be a partly cloudy day in the high 60’s. There will be a Mother’s Day Festival at Boordy Vineyards on both Saturday, May 10th and Sunday, May 11th. Known as “Maryland’s oldest family-run winery”, Boordy Vineyards is located in Baltimore County roughly 15 minutes north of the Beltway. It’s certainly a good place for the whole family where there are constant events being held throughout the summer including: concerts, vendors, book-signings, and dance lessons. Click here to find out more about Boordy Vineyards. If you do decide to attend the festival (being held rain or shine), Ellis Woodward will provide live music, and Carl’s Catering will provide the food. Admission for adults is $12 and $5 for children. Packages are offered for entire families. Most importantly, however, treat every day as Mother’s Day and show your appreciation. Moms are the best! To my mother: Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for being a person I can admire, I love you. ![]() Something else to do on the weekend, Bay Café is a great place to hangout during the spring and summer months for the “outdoor” club scene. It’s not too crowded to the point where you can’t move, but just right in my opinion. They’re always having 2-for-1-drink happy hours and live bands; during the summer they will start their bikini contests – for those of you who enjoy those types of things. ![]() ![]() |
![]() I like to think that each day is a learning experience. The reason why I say this is because I have tried something new. Golf. Yes, golf. When speaking about golf to other people, it seems as though you either love it or hate it. My feeling about golf is that it would never be for me. Why? Well simply because my interest usually depends on trying a sport that would come naturally to me. Golf to me, does not come naturally at all. Please don’t get the wrong idea; I am in no way a great athlete. However, I like to think that I am a fairly athletic person who has always enjoyed sports for the mere joy of it, not necessarily the competition. I have played a little soccer, basketball, volleyball, and tennis throughout the years. One thing I could bring to any sport was my ability to sprint. I do not necessarily enjoy running, but put a ball in front of me and I will chase it like a dog playing “go fetch”. So you see: Golf does not match my style. It requires NO running, much focus, and an enormous amount of technicality. I surely appreciate those who can perfect the game especially due to the patience it entails. A couple years ago, I had gone a few times to a driving range; and no I didn’t have the proper gloves one would usually use to golf. Therefore, since I had gotten blisters on my hands the previous times, I then brought gardening gloves to make me stand out even more. The first few times at the range I followed little direction and virtually no technique, but somehow made the ball go quite far. Now, a couple years since going to the driving range, I have been trying to actually work on a technique. Thanks to my brother who plays golf on a regular basis (and is border-line obsessed with it) I now swing with a million thoughts in my mind: Is my grip too tight? Is my left elbow straight? Is my right elbow bent correctly? Is my head still down as I’m swinging? Am I finally breaking my habit of swinging my hips before I swing? I’m hitting the ball, now follow through with the shot! Goodness gracious! There are so many things to think about while swinging that club! However, my mission today is to tell all of you who have a bad impression of golf to try it! It is surprisingly therapeutic and if you are not into actually playing the game of golf, it’s still a lot of fun to just go to the driving range. There are plenty of good driving ranges in Baltimore to try out! Try here.

I’m sending a shout out to all of you who came by the Towsontown Spring Festival this past weekend. It was packed! I myself was there yesterday Sunday May 4, 2008 with a group of friends and thoroughly enjoyed “pigging out” on a huge pit beef sandwich and swirled ice cream cone to finish off! Having spent the last hour or so of the festival in the 98 Rock Beer Garden, it’s quite evident that Baltimore has a die-hard rock fan base. The two bands I saw were definitely entertaining! The Amish Outlaws proved that good-old fashioned audience participation never gets old. These guys are truly unpredictable hailing from Lancaster, Pennsylvania where 4 out of the original 6 band members were raised under the strict traditions of the Amish. The guys left their Amish ways and found freedom in playing anything from rap mogul Dr. Dre to well-known television theme songs. Check out their website and see where they will play next.
The last featured band in the 98 Rock Beer Garden was Never Never. A band that has been together since the late 80’s, this band is truly a class act covering artists such as Led Zepplin, Rolling Stones, the Beetles, and Eric Clapton. Click here to visit their website.

Hello everyone! Despite today’s ugly wet weather in Baltimore, I hope all of you had a chance to enjoy the gorgeous weather we had this past weekend. There’s so much going on these days that I wish I could be everywhere at once! However, I somehow ended up at the Inner Harbor this past Saturday afternoon where I was pleased to see so many people out and about. After walking past a national cheerleading competition at Pier 5 and spotting people playing beach volleyball at the courts, I instead chose to do something much less active, but just as satisfying – eating! I realize I’m not the one informing you on where to eat, however, having enjoyed my meal at a table outside, this outdoubtedly falls into outdoor recreation! Does anyone like sushi? I myself was a bit reluctant to try it until about two years ago when a couple girlfriends of mine brought me out to enjoy it, and I have to say I have been hooked ever since! I prefer the sushi rolls that are cooked, and if you add cream cheese to anything - especially sushi - I will easily become a fan. My lunch date this past weekend was at Edo Sushi at the Inner Harbor, and I have to give them their props: friendly servers and great food! Not to mention, eating at any place overlooking the harbor with people flocking the sidewalk on a beautiful spring Saturday afternoon will most likely always be a relaxing and pleasurable experience. Here were the top 5 most-crowded places at the Inner Harbor this past weekend:

Greetings! As most of you may know, Earth Day was yesterday, and there are events occurring around the world for this entire week in honor of our planet. I would like to take this opportunity to inform all of you on Baltimore events in which you could take part in enriching the earth simply by making your community greener! Baltimore Green Week (www.baltimoregreenweek.org) is a city-wide program in charge of events, informative lectures, activities, and includes the EcoFestival this Saturday April 26, 2008 (raindate April 27th) at Druid Hill Park by the Reservoir. Click here for details. Have you ever taken the Global Ecological Footprint Quiz? If you have not, you really should – it’s a must! I took an environmental biology course in college that I rate as my second-favorite course I have ever taken. It really made an impression on me mainly because it was a science course that I actually enjoyed (I myself was never cut out for the science and math courses). As part of an assignment, each person in the class had to go online and take this quiz which measured our impact on the earth based on our individual lifestyle:
Once you finish the quiz, the results are measured in “global hectares” (gha) based on the “biocapacity of the earth”. The average number of global hectares used by a person is 21 gha. My personal score was a whopping 43.70 gha, which was a bit of a wake-up call; it made me think of some changes I could make in my lifestyle that would be helpful to our earth. If you try this quiz, I would love to hear about your results! ![]()

![]() ![]() Greetings! If you’re reading this, I thank you very much, but when you get the chance today PLEASE go outside and enjoy this lovely sunny day in Baltimore! It also sounds like we will have a gorgeous spring weekend as well so it’s time to start making plans on what outside events/activities there are to do. I have a couple plugs to make. Regarding my old neighborhood and parish to which I belong, there will be a Wine Tasting Festival this Sunday April 20, 2008 held outside that you have got to attend. Why you ask? It will feature homemade Italian wine of course (another plug for my heritage in case you did not pick up on my Italian surname). Here are the details for you: The Highlandtown Community Association and Di Pasquale's Italian Market sponsor the fifth annual Highlandtown Wine Festival celebrating the tradition of home winemaking. The event, held at Our Lady of Pompei Convent Garden, features a Homemade Wine Competition, Wine Tastings, Bocce Tournament, food and rockabilly music by the Flea Bops. Admission is $20 and includes a souvenir wine glass and five wine tastings. Tickets are available at Di Pasquale's Italian Market (3700 Gough Street, Baltimore 410-276-6787) and Mastellone Deli & Wine (7212 Harford Road, Baltimore 410-444-5433). Community Rallies Around Festival — Every year the Highlandtown Wine Festival has inspired community improvement projects. Every year a neighborhood cleanup takes place on consecutive Saturdays before. In the past metal work has been restored and side walks were repaved by a group of local contractors. This year the festivals home gets an update when Petrucci Contracting and an anonymous sponsor repave the Convent Courtyard building a stone feature marking the center of “Highlandtown Wine Country”. Proceeds from the Highlandtown Wine Festival benefit community projects and improvements. Bocce Tournament Saturday and Sunday all Day! For those of you wondering what that word “bocce” means, it is an old game that you might have seen being played on the courts in Little Italy on Stiles Street across from Caesar’s Den. If you were too distracted to follow the game due to the loud arguments between the Italian players, it’s quite an interesting game (click here for the game’s history). And trust me, the arguing makes it oh-so-entertaining! Also, for those of you fascinated by the Italian culture, visit the organization I took part in building: The Modern Italian Network (founder Matthew Platania) at My.ModernItalian.org |
![]() April 16, 2008 When was the last time you went for a hike, a run, or a bike ride? I don’t know about you, but riding on a bike makes me feel like a giddy kid again. Only now, I don’t ride my little bright green bike around the block I used to live on in Baltimore city. I’m keeping an eye out for different trails to visit and in case you didn’t know, there are so many trails to enjoy on a Sunday morning for a cool breeze and beautiful Maryland scenery – and you might not even realize the workout you would be getting! As I mentioned above, I grew up in Highlandtown of Southeast Baltimore, so I like to consider myself a city girl at heart even if I end up living on or near a farm. Although I do not live in the city anymore, I have grown accustomed to the sound of sirens, large trucks, street congestion, pot holes, and pollution just like any urban area – and I love it! In fact, I still remember the first time I slept over a relative’s house in Carney when I was a child; I could not fall asleep due to the sound of one cricket, but put me back in a city house with a roaring fire engine and a fleet of cop cars underneath my window and I could sleep like a baby. Perhaps this is the reason why I prefer a walk or bike ride around or through the Inner Harbor. Of course it’s a tourist area, and if you are a Baltimorean, it’s a refreshing thing to see why the Inner Harbor is the main attraction to our city. If you are really looking for a long workout, make the venture around the Inner Harbor all the way to one of my favorite places: Fort McHenry (there is a bike route along Pratt Street to Key Highway with signs leading to the historic battlefield). Beyond the fact that Fort McHenry was a battle ground which Americans used to defend Baltimore against the British during the Civil War, Fort McHenry is ironically a very peaceful place. I guess for me, it is the bike ride through the city sounds (which I still enjoy) that allow me to seek rest at Fort McHenry and enjoy silence and serenity; this is a much-needed place in our day in age of cell phones, computers, televisions, and stereos. Get back to nature – even for that one Sunday morning – and find your favorite place to either share with someone or keep for yourself!
