One of the best aspects of the Baltimore row house is the front yard. IT IS LITTLE. At least mine is, and so are most of them in the area where I live, which is considered Wyman Park/Hampden. My husband and I both hate to do yard work, so the small square patches of grass in front and in back of our house are very manageable.

I would like to give snaps to the homeowner on an undisclosed, fairly busy street in Hampden who has the freshest possible collection of home-grown lettuces, herbs and other treats displayed on their front patch of grass for passers-by to admire and the grower to eat. I walk by that house frequently on our (me and my darling daughters') afternoon stroll. The veggies and herbs are neatly packed into plastic and terra cotta pots/containers and look really healthy. If I didn't have mad respect for this urban farmer I would have sampled the produce weeks ago -- it looks soooo good!

If I had a thumb of green, I, too, would get on the grow-your-own bandwagon. Groceries are so frackin' expensive now that maybe farming our own food will soon become a necessity. Is it time to run to the hills? Is the end neigh? Should I fill my car's tank with french fry grease and pack an emergency kit full of snacks for toddlers and cat food? Whiskey and water for the grown-ups. I could start smoking again. You gotta smoke if you're heading for the safety of the middle of nowhere. People don't die of lung cancer before they are eaten by grizzly bears. The girls could grow up on the fat of the land and rock mad survival skills. Or maybe we'll just stay put and live on the two thriving basil and rosemary plants in our little back yard. Tap water doesn't taste so bad. We'll make do.

Ten cents to despair

November 13, 1:03 AM
How is it possible that the regular sized containers of soy yogurt I buy for my occasionally lactose intolerant daughters have gone up TEN CENTS in price since I last purchased some A WEEK AGO?! At this rate, if they continue to rise in price TEN CENTS... Read More

Chickie quickie

November 10, 3:14 PM
Despite my efforts to have dinner planned each and every night for the hoard of picky eaters in my house, I probably manage to succeed at this task 50-60% of the time. The other meals end up being pasta and sauce. Yuck. Well, not always yuck, just when... Read More

Indulge in homemade Orange Cakey

November 3, 3:14 PM
My youngest refers to cake as "cakey". I refer to anything sweetish and bready as cake in the interest of not having to describe every single nuanced thing I offer to my darling daughters – the word cake tells them enough. Muffins, coffee... Read More

I don’t know about you all out there, but from where I’m sittin’, things are looking a little bleak on the moolah front lately. Groceries especially. Eating out especially. Lucky for me I rarely get out, so the urge to spend is hardly... Read More

The Two Terrible Toddlers Turn Two

September 23, 2:42 PM
Okay. I take it back. They're not completely terrible, but there are two of them, and this Thursday they turn two. Beenie, the older one by six minutes appears to be going through a growth spurt, assuming a ravenous appetite is the kind of thing that... Read More

Deadly Nightshades for Dinner!

September 17, 3:28 PM
Things are finally settling after our trip to Rehoboth Beach, DE last week. We unpacked, the ladies are starting to get their sleeping schedules back in order, and I made a big vat of food yesterday to make dinner the 'heat-it-up' sort of thing for me... Read More
