My friend Tammy HQ and I went to see the BodyWorlds exhibit at the Maryland Science Center this evening. If you haven't seen it, here's a brief description from the website:

"Real human bodies show the details of disease and anatomy that cannot be shown with models. They also allow us to understand how each body has its own unique features, even on the inside. One of the special features of this exhibition is that it offers people a chance to see the real thing in a safe and informative environment."

The deceased human specimens undergo a procedure called plastinisation, which somehow preserves the body, including everything -- nerves, skin (though not much skin is showing), organs -- you get the idea. I think human anatomy is cool and I wanted to see it, so I did.

Now this is a little bit gross, but some of these preserved muscles looked like edible things. There were many instances I felt I was viewing some kind of pulled pork product. Other items resembled a dried salmon jerky. I know it isn't appetizing, but the human body looks like a meal to somebody -- lions, cheetahs, great white sharks. Maybe aliens, too?

I left the Maryland Science Center slightly nauseated -- glad I saw the body stuff, but also not too excited about the meat-filled cook outs of the impending summer. I came home and had a delicious Masala Veggie Burger from Trader Joe's. Nothing meaty about it. Maybe I should become a vegetarian again. I was a vegetarian for years while I was in college, but then I moved to Chicago, meat capital of the universe, and was suddenly nibbling delicious cheeseburgers before I could say sassage.
