Waverly Farmer's Market and Artscape

Sure, sure. I know that EVERYONE goes to the farmer's market in the summer. I also know that the illustrious Dining Examiner already did an overview of area farmer's markets at the beginning of the season. I'm not re-inventing the wheel here. Just sharing some thoughts on the whole thing.

Two weeks ago my hubby and I took our daughters to the Waverly Farmer's Market. We had a cook-out to go to later in the day on Saturday, and had committed to bringing a fruit salad. We picked up some bright red, very ripe strawberries and some perfect blueberries at the market, as well as a bouquet of flowers for our hosts.

It was humid and about a hundred degrees that morning. The market was packed. I have to say that despite the extreme heat, I was lovin' the Waverly market. There is a great mix of people from the neighborhood and beyond jam packed into a relatively small area, admiring and scooping up fresh, local foods. This might not seem too special to someone from, say, New York, where all kinds of people live in close proximity to one another. But Baltimore still has some serious boundaries in terms of class and race segregation. I can't say that I have ever experienced any animosity toward myself or witnessed any kind of weird vibe from anyone else at the farmer's market. People come to this event weekly to get their food on, and what brings out the love in someone or a group of people better than tasty treats?

Another excellent food (and art) event coming up at the end of this month is Artscape. If you haven't experienced Artscape, I recommend taking a gander this year, July 18th-20th. It is a huge arts festival with tons of different kinds of food and a plethora of strange and wonderful art. I mention this event also, because Baltimore's fine citizens are extremely kind and human to one another during this festival. No matter what you have heard about this city, I believe the bad things are dispelled when we all get together in the sunshine to appreciate the important things in life like food, music and art. If you are feeling like you aren't a part of things in Charm City, this event is a must. Feel the love. Eat the food.
