Ants

The warm, er, SWELTERING MISERABLE HOT weather brings ants into my house. I don’t hate ants. I am interested in their highly organized lines of lady workers walking right through the corners of the door, like it isn't even there. They have been congregating for the past few weeks directly underneath my daughters’ high chairs for obvious reasons. They aren’t interested in other parts of the house, just the snacky parts. The girls provide a plentiful supply of veggie sticks, eggs, dry cereal, gooey yogurt clumps, sticky juice residue, as well as any number of other items for the worker ants to bring to their Ant Queen(s).

According to the National Geographic website, “…ants can lift and carry more than three times their own weight.”  I have witnessed this many times, right in my own house. I just love to see a huge hunk of food moving across the floor as if by magic! Amazing creatures, ants.

When the weather is bearable, I give my daughters their afternoon snacks outside in our back yard. Inevitably there are items -- crackers, cookies, squirts of juice -- that escape their small paws and that’s where the ants come in. When they are finished, a larger, unknown creature takes care of the leavings. At least that’s what happens in my back yard.

So, I don’t hate them, and they can hang as long as it is outside. Unfortunately, I have to sometimes brutally interrupt and end their efficient collection of baby droppings in the kitchen. Dare I say, end their lives...worker ants beware!
