Busy Week

May 23, 2:28 PM

Busy week -- haven’t had a moment to write. It isn’t as if I haven’t been thinking about food. I have. Every day. I had multiple opportunities to eat out this week, which was good because as I’ve said in the past, I don’t get out much.

Here’s a list of places I've eaten this week:

1.    Golden West Café in Hampden
2.    Saigon Remembered next to Belvedere Square
3.    Greg’s Bagels in Belvedere Square
4.    The Hon Bar in Hampden
5.    Atwater’s in Belvedere Square

That’s a lot, right? Wow. The only place I remembered to bring my temperamental camera was Atwater’s.

My mom was in town this week and wanted to go out for lunch with me and her little grand-daughters. I though the Golden West Café would be a good choice since I’ve seen little kids there before, and the wait staff seems to be used to it. We ordered up garlic fries and scrambled eggs for the ladies, which, with the addition of ketchup was a practically perfect meal. They drank water from real glasses, which they love. Plus the Golden West has a little area set off to the side, a lounge if you will, that has toys and kiddie books, so when they inevitably start getting a little wild, you can take them over and let them tool around and be the wild things that they must be.

My husband and I were able to go out for dinner TWO TIMES this week while my mom stayed home with the ladies. We hit Saigon Remembered, located directly across from The Senator Theatre. I got a vegetable, tofu, curry noodle dish which was good, though a group of guys at a table across the aisle from us ordered a bunch of pho, which gave me food envy, a horrible condition I am very susceptible to. Their rare and well-done beef pho soup is great, and I will have to get it next time.

The following night we hit a movie at The Rotunda, which is just down the street from our row house, then went over afterward to The Hon Bar for some Resurrection Ale (mmmmmmm), garlic fries and steamed shrimp. It was exactly what I wanted and I was not disappointed.

After an early morning play date with about 8 or 10 rambunctious toddlers (my ears are still ringing), my mom and daughters and I drove up to Greg’s Bagels in Belvedere Square for some kick-ass lox and got a bunch of bagels to go. Don’t forget about Greg’s – go there and eat well as often as possible.

I had about two hours Thursday afternoon before my mom left to go out by myself, and I thought that Atwater’s at Belvedere Square would be a good choice for a late lunch. I had a divine Middle Eastern Golden Lentil soup with minty-garlic yogurt sauce drizzled on top, with a ½ Turkey Bacon sandwich with cheddar cheese, avocado, lettuce (I’ll get back to the lettuce), garlic mayo on Country White bread. I had to stop eating at one point just to gaze at the unnaturally vibrant lettuce on this sandwich. It was glowing green. Unlike any lettuce I’ve seen before. I don’t think the photo I took does it justice.

Now it’s back to me as short-order cook. Maybe I’ll have a left-over bagel for lunch.

Greg's Bagels

May 18, 10:56 PM
Saturday I woke up feeling extremely raw. I fasted all morning to make sure what needed to pass did, but by the time noon-thirty rolled around and the babies were in bed for their nap, my thoughts turned to one thing: bagels and lox. It’s all I... Read More
