Recently, due to a promise to meet a family member for a drink, I found myself in the precarious position of being very over dressed in a local Harford County Biker Bar. As I realized that I was being noticed as an unwelcome outsider and suspected as being undercover law enforcement, I thought it best not to make eye contact with anyone and stare straight ahead to what was to soon become the stage for the evening’s entertainment.
While staring uncomfortably as the band set up, I noticed the rather eclectic nature of the bands’ personnel. The drummer and the bass player were relatively young clean-cut guys who looked about as out of place as me. The lead guitarist was in his forties and was dressed pretty conservatively as well. As the band tinkered at tuning, in walked the singer, the pirate, long blank hair, bandanna grit helmet, and dark sunglasses. He looked to be about 50 with arms like Popeye.
The band was called Cut N’Dry and they were anything but. Despite their perplexing appearance and even more perplexing venue, these guys rocked. Not being the biggest fan of cover bands, I was skeptical at first, but I was soon pleasantly surprised to hear a cover band who performed anything but your standard classic rock covers. From Stevie Ray Vaughn, to Tom Petty, to ZZ Top and even the Animals, this band played covers with an original spin. The band was well mixed and the performances polished. It was a small venue, but the volume was perfect. The lead and rhythm guitarists were obviously well-rehearsed in that their performances meshed well and were not redundant. The lead guitarist, the band’s stand out talent, showed marked volume restraint but let loose when the time was right. As the bar’s patrons let out an occasional hoot or holler or joined in for an air guitar accompaniment, I had to wonder if the people in this place really knew how good these guys were.
The lessoned learned: Sometimes good bands come in bad places. Go see Cut N’ Dry. If the venue is sketchy, just watch the band!
