Electric - Converting Your Car

May 20, 6:39 PM
by Kyle Busch, Automotive Examiner

With sky-high fuel prices, what driver does not want
to cut from using gasoline to run his or her car? Small
electric cars start at about $25,000. What if you could
convert your car to run entirely on electric? Now you can!

Several electric conversion kits are available now and
more are likely to come on the market.

Three examples of electric conversion kits from
Wilderness E.V. include:

Kit #4 is a high performance 144 volt DC conversion
kit and could be placed in a kit car, such as the one above.

The complete components for Kit #4 are as follows:

·         Series Motor 90 HP Peak 6.7" diameter X 15.5" long
·         Curtis Controller 1231C (144 volts DC at 400 amps)
·         Adapter Plate for vehicle
·         Shaft Coupler - Motor to transmission(clutch-less)
·         0-5k (pb5)Throttle Box
·         40 ft of #2/0 gauge Wire Cable
·         Contactor- Kilovac EV200 (2000 amp rupture 200 amp continuous)
·         50-150 VDC Volt Meter
·         0-500 Amp Meter
·         Gauge Holder Bracket
·         50mv - 500 Amp Shunt
·         12 - High Current Copper Ring Terminals
·         48 - Battery Cable Terminals
·         Fuse - 500 amp slow blow
·         Battery Charger Zivan NG3 144 VDC
·         12 vdc Smart Battery Charger (for accessory battery)
·         General Plans & Wiring Schematics

Kit #3 is a 96 volt kit that gives freeway speeds at
a lower cost then Kit #4.  Great performance can be
had with a 96 volt setup especially when installing
it in a fiberglass kit car like the Bradley GT in the picture
above. 96 volts also lets you charge with a normal 110
volt outlet without adding any extra cost.

The complete components for Kit #3 are as follows:

·         Series Motor 90 HP Peak 6.7" diameter X 15.5" long
·         Curtis Controller 1221C (120 volts DC at 400 amps)
·         Adapter Plate for vehicle
·         Shaft Coupler - Motor to transmission(clutch-less)
·         0-5k (pb5)Throttle Box
·         40 ft of #2/0 gauge Wire Cable
·         Contactor- Kilovac EV200 (2000 amp rupture 200 amp continuous)
·         50-150 VDC Volt Meter
·         0-500 Amp Meter
·         Gauge Holder Bracket
·         50mv - 500 Amp Shunt
·         12 - High Current Copper Ring Terminals
·         32 - Battery Cable Terminals
·         Fuse - 500 amp slow blow
·         Battery Charger Zivan NG1 96 VDC
·         12 vdc Smart Battery Charger (for accessory battery)
·         General Plans & Wiring Schematics

Kit #2 uses a series motor that can achieve freeway
speeds of up to 60 mph at 72 Volts DC in ideal conditions.
The motor is manufactured by D&D motor systems and is
rated at 40 HP peak. It measures 6.7" diameter x 12.28"
long and weighs 62 lbs.

The complete components for Kit #2 are as follows:

·         Adapter Plate for vehicle
·         Shaft Coupler - Motor to transmission(clutch-less)
·         Series Motor 40 HP 6.7" diameter X 12.28" long
·         0-5k (pb5)Throttle Box
·         30 ft of #2/0 gauge Wire Cable
·         Contactor- Kilovac EV200 (2000 amp rupture 200 amp continuous)
·         50-150 VDC Volt Meter
·         0-500 Amp Meter
·         Gauge Holder Bracket
·         50mv - 500 Amp Shunt
·         12 - High Current Copper Ring Terminals
·         24 - Battery Cable Terminals
