Not Your Father's Diesel
POSTED April 28, 9:54 PM

In your father’s day, diesel cars were known to be
rancorously noisy, stinky, low on go, and possibly
even a no start on a cold winter day. Today’s diesels
have cleaned up their act. Smoke from the tail pipe
is vastly reduced.  Only the slightest workmen chatter
is detected at idle and power delivery is up. They start
in all weather conditions and deliver very good fuel
economy. The diesel is dependable as a dad and has
the fuel economy for today and even some quick
moves for tomorrow!

Mercedes-Benz offers the E320 diesel. The price of this
car starts at about $52,000. It gets about 35 miles
per gallon on the interstate. At the moment, this diesel
does not meet the emission requirements in the states of:
California, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts,
New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, or Vermont,
This car is very expensive for the average driver. An
affordable and economical diesel will be available in
the Mercedes Smart Car.

Volkswagen offers the Jetta and Golf with diesel power.
The prices of these cars start at about $17,000. Both
cars achieve close to 45 miles per gallon. As with
the Mercedes offering, the Jetta and Golf presently
do not meet the emissions standards in the states of:
California, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts,
New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, or Vermont.
Future VW diesel offerings will meet the emission
standards of all 50 states.

The diesel offerings in the United States are limited
because of emission requirements. New technology
and higher fuel economy will expand the number
of diesel powered vehicles coming to the U.S. in
the near future.
