I was shopping recently, and encountered a mother spanking her child for spitting in a store. The child was around six years old. The mom smacked the child directly in the mouth. Ouch!!!! What was interesting to me was that the her child did not cry. He did not flinch. He was use to being hit like this before.
When my husband and I decided to have children, we chose not to spank. Growing up, my parents did not spank my brother and me, while my husband did receive occasional spankings from his dad. As a result, we concluded that we were not open to this type of discipline.
Do you think that it should be against the law to spank your child? Is there a difference between tapping and hitting a child? Are you glad that you were spanked when you were young?
There has been proposed legislation in both California and Massachusetts to make it illegal to spank a child--even at home.
Disciplining children is a very personal thing. I understand that tapping a child on the hand to say no can be effective in certain situations. I think that spanking can become overused in other situations where we can teach our children to behave through talking, redirecting and time-outs. Weigh In.
