In my opinion, the problem is that children today are used to organized play. When I was younger ,we would hop on our bikes at any second or take out a jump rope and "poof" we had instant fun and exercise. Today's parents are competing with video games and television to get the children outside to just play.
I was in Target the other day, and the gaming section of the store was loaded with kids waiting for their turn on the various consoles. When I walked to the aisle with balls and hula hoops, I did not see many children at all. Our children are less interested in playing with balls, bats, skates, pogo sticks, jump ropes and most interested in playing with toys that entertain them. One of the reasons that children are not getting the exercise that their bodies need is because of the type of play that they desire. In my home I give the children TV tickets. Each child receives three 30-minute tickets each day to use as they choose. When your tickets are used up...so is your TV/ gaming time.
Weigh In. What are you doing as a parent to get your children to be more physically active? How have you reduced TV and Gaming times to increase your childs interest in outdoor activities? Share what is working.
