Giambi’s Gold Thong

May 20, 8:06 PM
by Pete Sabatini, Baltimore O's Examiner

Giambi's ThongAs you watch the Orioles take on the listless New York Yankees in a mid-week three game series in The Bronx and everyone talks about the pinstriped slump, keep this story in mind.

Just as many of his teammates, Jason Giambi has had a rough year so far.

It’s actually been a rough few years for the one-time MVP, but for a guy who doesn’t seem to have a physical ailment and is getting paid $23.4 million this year there isn’t, and shouldn’t be, much forgiveness for that lack of production.

How bad?  We’re talking nearly Ramon Hernandez-type numbers: .191 BA, 21 RBI, 8 HR, and .357 OBP only this guy has the second highest salary in the majors.

Baseball players are a notoriously superstitious bunch, so how does this once intimidating slugger bust a slump?  Questionable after-hours activities?  Extra reps in the batting cage?  Wearing his socks inside out?

No, no.  Giambi prefers to don his gold lame thong with flame waistband under his uniform.  Apparently, it’s the secret antidote to the slow-start blues.

It doesn’t seem to be doing the trick so far this season, or maybe he’s not wearing it backwards or something – but Jeter swears by it.

Yes, that’s right, it worked for Jeter.  Johnny Damon also vouches for it.  That’s right, it gets passed around.

So keep that in mind as the Orioles try to cash in while the Yankees are down, and see if you can pick out the Yankee who’s sporting the gold lame thong.

Note:  This story first surfaced a number of years ago and was publicized by the Boston Globe.  It recently resurfaced in a New York Daily News article and has been picked up all over again. But who gets tired of a gem like that!
