Brett Favre...A Raven? Say It Isn't So!

I
Peter Schmuck wrote in the Sun today that the Ravens should take a pass on Brett Favre if he comes out of retirement.  Absolutely correct.  First off, Favre should stay retired.  It's not right to keep jerking everybody's chain and making teams change their plans.  I love Farve and everything he did.  I loved his gunslinger mentality and the way he played the game.  If he still wants to play, then he shouldn't have retired.

That aside, if Farve came back looking for a new team, the Ravens should pass.

Can you imagine how potentially disastrous it would be if Favre came here?  First off, he would count about $8 million against the salary cap--that's money that could be used to develop some young talent.  Let's face it, some of the pillars of the team are getting older.  Ogden has already retired.  Ray Lewis--as gifted athletically as he is--has maybe 3 or 4seasons left.  There are questions marks on the offensive line.  We can spend our money much more wisely.

If Farve did play, how can Ozzie and the rest of the Ravens braintrust make long term plans.? He would disrupt the development of Troy Smith and Joe Flacco. He would force Cam Cameron to redesign the offense around him.   We would take a step backwards.

The only good thing is the p.r. the team would generate.  It would be a media circus and the feel good story of the year.  And the merchandise would fly off the shelves.

But it would soon be apparent that it was a bad move for the Ravens.   Sacks, Interceptions, Injuries, Frustration...it's a potentially ugly picture.

This may be one of the few times I agree with Peter Schmuck, but the Ravens should not even think about going after Favre.

What do you think?

Despite the fact that the Ravens are limping into the new season, the team will beat the Bengals.  I don't think Flacco is going to light up the scoreboard, nor do I think the offense, in general, is going to electrify the crowd. But I do think... Read More

The Ravens coaches think Joe Flacco gives them the best chance to win against the Bengals.  I disagree with the decision, but, having said that, I'm curious to see how Flacco does.  I do wish him well.  He is the future. There is, however,... Read More
