Phil Macek treats every aspect of the Ravens--from the preseason to the last snap of the game--as if it's fourth and inches and the game's tied late in the fourth quarter. He'll keep you up to speed on all things Ravens.
Todd Heap has a reputation for being soft. He has missed quite a few games over the past several seasons due to various ailments. But with the absence of big Quinn Sypniewski for the upcoming season, the Ravens need Heap to stay healthy and produce. A healthy Heap gives the quarterback another option and prevents the opposing defense from blanketing the receivers on obvious passing downs.
In other words, a healthy Heap gives Cam Cameron's offense the chance to be more aggressive and creative.
An injured Heap, however, could spell trouble. If Heap can't go and with Sypniewski on the shelf, then either Daniel Wilcox or Lee Vickers would have to play TE. I don't know about you, but neither one of those is an awe-inspiring choice to me. Oh sure, I'd go with Wilcox over Vickers, but the drop-off in talent is huge when compared to Heap.
In addition, the absence of production from the TE position will highlight the hole in the O-line left by JO. A healthy Heap would be a nice safety valve for a pressured quarterback--be it Boller, Smith, or Flacco. I don't think Wilcox or Vickers can be a valuable, consistent receiver for the Ravens.
So I hope Heap is working out, stretching, resting and getting himself ready for the rigors of another season. Maybe this will be the season he'll go all 16 games and shake that reputation for being soft. I hope so.
This one stings. A late TD toss by Kerry Collins keeps the Titans unbeaten and the Ravens thinking about what could -- no, what SHOULD -- have been. For most of the game Kerry Collins played more like Joan Collins, boasting a quarterback rating... Read More Topics:

I got a comment the other day from a reader who is worried that Baltimore's loss to the Steelers is the beginning of a downward spiral. Sorry, but I don't see it. Though they lost, the Ravens played hard (despite the mental mistakes) and... Read More Topics:

The game Monday night was hard to swallow. It would have been different if the Steelers had just beaten us, but I know that we, in reality, gave the game away. Jarret Johnson's foolish penalty didn't help; it gave the Steelers momentum, which... Read More Topics:

In compiling this list of the best 10 moments in Ravens history, I'm struck by how many plays and moments have to be passed over. In their relatively short existence, the Ravens have stockpiled enough memories to fill 50 "Best Of"... Read More Topics:

O.K., unrelated to the Ravens, unless they're playing in February, but I just heard that Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will be the halftime entertainment for Super Bowl XLIII. It gets no better than this.Let the debates over the set list... Read More
Time to put my 2-0 record on the line. Baltimore's Monday night game against the Steelers features the two best defenses in the NFL. Throw in the fact that Baltimore has a rookie quarterback and a road game and it all adds up, I think, to... Read More Topics:
