Don't Let The Door Hit You, Mr. Martin

July 1, 11:00 PM

I'm not going to pull any punches here.  Derrick Martin was arrested on possession charges in Cleveland recently.  The Ravens response should be swift and severe: Derrick Martin should be shown the door.  Look, he's a sixth-round pick for starters.  He's not going to the hall of fame.  At best, he'll be a journeyman who bounces around from team to team and struggles to find a roster spot.  Let him be somebody else's problem.

I know what you're thinking, he deserves a second chance and all that.  Yeah, maybe, but not here.  If John Harbaugh really cares about steering the team in a new direction and making character matter, he has to convince the top brass to let Martin go.  It's plain and simple.

In this day and age, I am sick to death of all the well-paid (hell, extremely over paid) athletes who consider themselves beyond reproach.  Sorry, Derrick, you did something illegal and got caught.  Now it's time to pay the price.  Let Derrick and all the others see what it's like to have a non-glamorous 40-hour/week job, where, at the end of the week, you're lucky to have a couple of bucks left over for a dinner out with friends.  Maybe then they would appreciate their ridiculous salaries.  Maybe.

I know that this is a relatively minor thing in the grand scheme of things, but it's important for the Ravens to do the right thing.  If they care about their standing in the community and all the fans who have young kids, they will.  Here's hoping they do.
