Why the Ravens Will Start The Season With A Win

May 27, 11:09 AM

I spent some time this past weekend ruminating on the Ravens schedule, and, specifically, the first game.  The team opens up with a home game against the Bengals on September 7th.  Tough division game right out of the box.  Last season, the Ravens opened with the Bengals and found themselves on the short end of a 27-20 game.  The team looked flat and made too many mental mistakes.  This year will be different.  Here's why:

1. John Harbaugh--John Harbaugh will get this team ready to play.  He will toughen it up physically and mentally.  The team will drink the Kool-Aid.  The players will respond by playing hard and flying all over the field.  They will win this game for their new coach.  The defense, led by a rejuvenated Ray Lewis, will shut down Carson Palmer and his weapons.

2. Chad Johnson--The T.O. of the division.  His antics are growing tiresome and could divide the locker room.  Depending on how selfish "Ocho Cinco" is feeling, he could potentially disrupt the entire offensive scheme.  He has talent, to be sure, but he is a head case.  If I were Marvin Lewis, I would keep CJ on a short leash and develop more plays to go to TJ Houshmandzadeh.  There is no point in trying to satisfy a disgruntled player.  Johnson wants to be traded.  Look for the circus surrounding him to poison the team's NOW! mentality.

3. High Expectations--Some of the preason polls I've been reading, have the Bengals finishing ahead of the Ravens and challenging the Steelers and Browns for top honors in the AFC North.  To me, the Bengals can be hot and cold and Marvin Lewis, a brilliant tactician, could have to spend too much time babysitting.  If the Bengals believe their press, they will be their own worst enemy.  They are, at worst, an unfocused, selfish group.  If they think they can just show up and win, like I expect them to, they'll be ripe for the picking.

It should be a close game, but the Ravens prevail and start the Harbaugh era off on the right foot!

The season opener should be a physical game, but the Ravens will win it!
