We Can Never Forget

May 20, 12:20 PM

I was fortunate enough to be born a Baltimore Colts fan.  I was too late for Johnny Unitas, Ray Berry, Artie Donovan, and Lenny Moore; though, I think, I've assimilated their stories by listening to my dad.  I grew up with Bert Jones, Roger Carr, Lydell Mitchell, and the venerated Sack Pack.  I loved those guys.  I still do.  Needless to say, March 1984 was a dark period--the nadir of my pigskin-loving existence.  I can't see a Mayflower truck without having a flashback.  I hope it's very warm where Bob Irsay is right now.

And I still wonder how different everything would be if John Elway hadn't spurned us.  And it would be different.

So I was very wary when the Ravens came to town in 1996.  And even now I maintain a healthy skepticism.  Sure, I want them to win, but, even more, I want them to put down deep roots and be classy and first-rate, like the heroes that were ripped from our embrace by a drunker canker sore of a man.  Fortunately, Mr. Biscotti runs a proud organization.

With that said, I'm ecstatic a new era has dawned.  I'm glad Brian Billick has been let go.  I'm excited about Coach Harbaugh and our prospects for success.  I wish the season started today!
