![]() With average Americans already hurtling earthward because of rising inflation, falling home values, accumulating debt and nearly stagnant wages, what else could go wrong? Mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac needing a taxpayer bailout, that's what! The quasi-private Fannie in particular seems to have been run incredibly poorly the past decade, with its bigwigs racking up millions in bonuses despite being at the center of scandals. You can read The Examiner's editorial on the subject here. |

![]() This was a hard cartoon for me to draw, but I felt it had to be done. I've tackled this issue a couple of times before, as it's something that resonates with me -- especially so now that I'm a father. Here is the news story my cartoon references. This agency exists to safeguard the D.C. children who are most in need of help. Today we learned that the agency's director, Sharlynn Bobo, has resigned. I hate when I'm cynical, but I doubt the director's resignation will change the neglectful institutional culture that has contributed to more poor kids ending up in coffins. |

![]() This cartoon gave me an excuse to relive my teenage years, when I spent much of my free time drawing over-muscled, spandex-clad superheroes. Originally, I thought of drawing The Hulk smashing up a gas station in response to high gas prices, but I felt like I've been harping on that subject a lot lately. (Though, for good reason.) When I read the story about Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke's warning on the health care crisis, I decided a switch of scenery to a pharmacy was in order. |

![]() If the Democrats succeed in enacting a windfall profits tax on oil companies, it will inevitably backfire. The tax will get passed on to consumers in the form of even higher gas prices, which is the last thing America needs while it slogs through this tough economic spell. Mind you, I've never been a defender of the oil industry, but this isn't just bad business for Exxon Mobil -- it's bad business for ordinary Americans, too. Update: On a whim, I colored the cartoon when I got home tonight. One of these days I'll figure out a way to streamline the coloring process so that I can do color cartoons for the print edition. One of these days... |

![]() There's still debate over whether mankind is primarily responsible for global warming or if it's largely because of Earth's natural climate cycle. My feeling on the matter is somewhere in the middle of the two sides. I think there's a preponderance of evidence that shows climate change is taking place, though many "doubters" disagree. But as Americans read news report after news report of ice shelves breaking up or CO2 levels rising, their minds are changing. Ironically like the polar bear now, the "doubters" are a threatened species. Here is what The Examiner's editorial had to say about the polar bear's new "threatened" status. |

![]() A column today by Examiner columnist Melanie Scarborough put a bee in my bonnet. My cartoon doesn't take on her arguments directly, but it does involve the same issue: gay marriage. I'm of the mind that government shouldn't be in the marriage business to begin with; that's the purview of churches, synagogues, mosques, etc. Also, aren't there a bunch of other institutions in much greater immediate danger than marriage? Social Security, anyone? Health care?! |

![]() I used my backup brush on this cartoon, and while I didn't feel completely comfortable inking it, I'm pleased with the way it turned out. I also feel very strongly about the message of this cartoon, as energy independence is one of my pet issues. No politician -- especially our "decider in chief" President Bush -- seems to have the guts to lead the country away from the oil standard. It would certainly entail short-term financial pain for certain sectors of our economy and may drive some businesses to extinction, but the long-term benefits of vigorously spurring development and implementation of an oil alternative outweigh all of it. We need the kind of leadership that helped put the first man on the moon. Unfortunately, modern politicians leave me feeling more cynical each day about America's chances for true energy independence. |

![]() The D.C. government's tax office can't seem to do anything right nowadays! See this article from Monday's newspaper for the scoop. |
