People familiar with the Tudor-style landmark know that it was originally called Funston Field House and that the surrounding park once served as a refugee camp for hundreds of people left homeless by the 1906 earthquake — a group that included my grandparents.
Nearly two years and $5.5 million later, the recreation center will officially reopen Saturday, and among those in attendance will be Gina Moscone, the widow of The City’s late Mayor George Moscone, for whom the center was renamed after he and Supervisor Harvey Milk were killed at City Hall.
The center is a jewel, which is why it took so long to renovate, since community residents insisted upon retaining most of its stylistic elements. However, there have been some additions, including a new roof and chimney, a modern kiln, adjustable basketball hoops and an electric scoreboard — a few things which were just not in vogue when the recreation center was built in 1924.
