The Giants’ $126 million problem
POSTED May 1, 10:34 PM
San Francisco Giants lefty Barry Zito has become the talk of the town — for all the wrong reasons.

His demotion from the team’s starting rotation has everyone from sports psychologists to cheerleaders weighing in on why he’s lost his stuff, and the general agreement seems to be it’s 50 percent physical and 90 percent mental (apologies to Yogi).

Now, Zito is climbing the charts of the worst free-agent signings in baseball history and has fans wondering whether he’ll turn in his mitt for a Martin guitar.

Some are comparing him to Nuke LaLoosh in “Bull Durham’’ (better duck, Lou Seal) and offering up critiques such as batting-practice moonballs — one reader suggests sending him down to the minors in Fresno (ouch).

But hey, he’s got people talking about the Giants, something that most experts figured would be impossible this early in the season.
