Prairie View got 20 points from Candice Thomas and overcame a off-night offensively from Gaati Werema to defeat Texas-Arlington 65-58 at the Basketball Travelers Tip-Off at United Spirit Arena in Lubbock Friday.
Latara Darrett added 19 points and Courtney Larsen had 10 points for the Lady Panthers (2-1). Werema scored just four points on 2-of-11 shooting, but she did grab a game-high 12 rebounds.
Shalyn Martin paced the Mavericks (2-2) with a double-double of 20 points and 14 rebounds. UTA out-boarded Prairie View 55-39, including 19-9 on the offensive glass, but could not convert their extra chances.
Prairie View will take on San Francisco this afternoon, while UTA plays host Texas Tech.
Missouri 69, Florida A&M 65
The Lady Tigers (3-1) overcame 33 points from Deidra Jones to hand the Rattlers their first loss of the season at Donald L. Tucker Center in Tallahassee.
Jones was just 9-of-23 from the floor, but hit 15 of her 17 free throws. Antonia Bennett added 11 points for FAMU.
Shakara Jones led Mizzu with 17 points and eight rebounds. RaeShara Brown chipped in with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Amanda Hanneman added 13 points.
Though the score was close, Missouri controlled the glass 49-39 and had the edge in assists 13-6.
Haskell Indian Nations 88, Johnson & Wales-Denver 50
Justina George scored 24 points to lead the hot-shooting Fighting Indians (10-2) past the Lady Wildcats (1-7) in Denver.
George also had eight rebounds. Maria Parker added 12 points and 13 of the 14 players who took the floor scored for Haskell. As a team, the Fighting Indians shot 48.4 percent from the floor and hit 62 percent (10-of-16) of their 3-pointers.
Sarah FitzPatrick led J&W's Denver campus with 15 points, while Andrea Austin added 11 points. LyVette Groce snagged a game-high 13 rebounds in the loss. The Lady Wildcats made only 29 percent of their field goals, 21 percent of the 3's (4-19) and 57 percent of their free throws (12-for-21).
