In a wild game defined by fumbles, Morehouse running back David Carter's rushing touchdown in overtime held up as the Maroon Tigers outlasted Benedict, 34-27, at the Palmetto Capital City Classic at Charlie W. Johnson Stadium in Columbia Saturday.
Morehouse (1-0, 1-0 SIAC) had to watch, with baited breath, because Benedict quarterback Riley led his Tigers (0-1, 0-1) to the goal line to try to tie the score. But, Riley fumbled for the fifth time, right at the goal line, and Morehouse erupted in celebration.
Carter finished with 179 rushing yards and scored three times. Quarterback William Brack threw for 157 yards and rushed for two more scores in a phase that caught Benedict off-guard.
"People think all we do is throw the ball all over the place," Morehouse head coach Rich Freeman told The State.com. "But, we know we must establish the run first to have success."
Despite having 481 yards of offense, Morehouse found itself trailing 27-21 with less than two minutes to play. Brack's 1-yard run proved to be the force that sent the game into overtime.
For his part, Benedict's Riley tried his best to overcome his mistakes. After fumbling on the very first play of the game, he compensated by throwing touchdown passes to Kareem Dunlap and Corey Gardhigh. He also rushed for another score.
Benedict's turnaround came courtesy of the one weakness in Morehouse's game -- special teams. Leading 21-7 in the second quarter, Morehouse attempted a field goal, but a bad snap negated any chance. Kicker Ian Mullen tried an ill-advised pass instead but was picked off by Benedict's Tyrone Davis. Davis returned the ball 77 yards to make the score 21-14 as the Tigers outscored Morehouse 21-0 before Brack's fourth-quarter touchdown.
The Maroon Tigers had a chance to win in regulation after Brack's score, but Mullen PAT was blocked by Gladel Brutes.
Benedict must rebound next week on the road at defending SIAC champion Tuskegee. Morehouse will visit Fort Valley State next week.
