Mike Tuitt hit two free throws to pull Hampton within a point, but it wasn't enough as the Pirates fell 62-61 against William & Mary at Kaplan Arena in Williamsburg, Virginia Wednesday.
Darrion Pellum missed a three-pointer with two seconds to go, keeping Hampton (0-4) winless on the season.
Danny Sumner broke a 57-57 tie late in the game with a free throw. Moments later, Quinn McDowell then hit two freebies to put the Tribe (3-2) up 62-59.
Pellum led Hampton and all scorers with 21 points. Vincent Simpson added 13 points and Charles Funches had 11 points for Hampton, which led 33-32 at the half.
David Schneider paced William & Mary with 16 points and eight rebound, while Summer had 15 points. McDowell finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.
