Clark Atlanta linebacker Zimier McCloud will be among 13 players from HBCU's who are scheduled to play in the annual East Coast Bowl Saturday in Petersburg, Virginia.
McCloud led the SIAC with 10.2 tackles per game, with 44 solo and 48 assisted in nine games. He was slightly ahead of Michael Thompson of Benedict, who had 42 solos and 55 assisted in 10 games, for an average of 9.7 per contest. Thompson was also named to the bowl game at Cameron Field at noon.
Four players from Hampton, two from Miles, two from Shaw, and one each from Virginia Union and St. Augustine's will join McCloud and Thompson in the bowl game.
Running back LaMarcus Coker, wide receiver Damon McDaniel, offensive lineman Nicholas Royal and punter Jahmal Blanchard will represent Hampton.
Miles College will send wide receiver Jeremy Cody and fullback Karell Law, while Shaw sends defensive specialists Quintez Smith and Isaiah Thomas.
Hurley "Tre" Hemphill, a linebacker for Virginia Union, linebacker Michael Thompson of Benedict, linebacker Gabriel Manns of North Carolina Central, and Richard Boone, a wideout for St. Augustine's, round out the selections.
The East Coast Bowl features players from Football Championship Subdivision (I-AA), NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA schools in a north versus south format. The game is sponsored by the city of Petersburg and the National Football Foundation, with proceeds benefiting high school students in the area.
This year's game will be coached by Steve Criswell and the staff of the Richmond Revolution of the Indoor Football League.
