On Jan. 8, Barbara Pierre broke her personal best in the 60-meter dash in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Friday, the St. Augustine's College sprinter shattered the mark again and, in the process, set the national record, running the 60 in a time of 7.18 seconds in the semifinals of the Penn State National indoor track & field meet in State College, Pennsylvania. The old mark, which was only three weeks old and set at the Tar Heel Invitational, was 7.25 seconds, good enough for the NCAA Division II national record.
The time Pierre ran Friday shattered the meet record of 7.28 and the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track Facility record of 7.26.
The only downside for Pierre might be that the mark was only the second fastest time in the world, 0.04 seconds behind Laverne Jones-Ferrette of the Virgin Islands. Jones-Ferrette ran 7.14 in Houston Jan. 15.
Pierre later won the 60-meter finals with a time of 7.21 seconds.
