An 'L Word' movie is in the making

Mia Kirschner played the bisexual Jenny on "The L Word"

Hoping to follow in the footsteps of the biggest money-making female-driven movie ever, "Sex and the City," there's confirmation that a big screen version of "The L Word" is in the making.

"L Word" creator Ilene Chaiken confirmed over the weekend that she is in the process of writing a movie based on the runaway hit with predominantly lesbian characters.

AfterEllen.com reporter Trish Bendix broke the story when Chaiken discussed the movie possibility online on Saturday (July 25). She said: "Movie is in scripting process."

The show lasted six seasons starting in 2004 and ended this year and focused on characters who were lesbian, bisexual and transgendered living in the West Hollywood area. Pam Grier, Jennifer Beals, Leisha Hailey and Katherine Moennig were among the cast.

Actress Laurel Holloman, playing a character who was bisexual on the show, is out as bisexual in real-life, and she is married to a man. Her character, Tina, however, became more and more a lesbian as the show went on, and rarely discussed her bisexuality.

Jenny Schecter, the show's staunchly out bisexual character, played by Mia Kirshner, was actually killed off in the show, although it's not clear who murdered her. Then, there's Alice, the flaky bisexual.

Cybill Shepherd also played a bisexual character, Phyllis, who left her longtime marriage to fall for a woman. And, there were other depictions of bisexuality in the show.

I've interviewed Jennifer Beals many times (mostly for magazines and in my book, not online, but click here are a few), and she's thrilled that people think she may be bisexual after watching the show and seeing her character. (She's been married twice.) And yes, she told me, "I think everyone has the capacity to be bisexual, or have feelings for either sex, if they're really honest with themselves. I mean, I thought I knew all about that and was pretty hip to all that, but being involved in the show opened me up to understanding it all a bit more."

It's not clear what characters will make it to the big screen version, but some major questions will be answered. And, "The L Word" may have not always been responsible for clearing misconceptions about bisexuality, but it certainly brought out a lot of issues concerning the subject, even more than "Sex and the City" did.

I won't loose the movie! In Italy we are at the 4th season, and I often reach for clips from 5th and 6th seasons in the Internet to see what will happen in the future. So, I'm exciting for the movie - waiting for Tibette's wedding in NY! I love TLW; it has help me to see deeper in me, and to accept to be bisexual

In the show Jenny actually came out as a lesbian, not as bisexual. Just because someone has had sexual relationships with the opposite sex doesn't mean that they consider themselves bisexual. Also, I am surprised you didn't mention the character Alice, as she was always identified as bisexual. It is always good to see bisexual relationships on TV, because this is truly a sexual orientation that is misunderstood. I have to admit though I didn't appreciate how IC brought Tina's bisexuality into the storyline in season three. Let's hope she does a better job with the writing in the movie.

When is bisexuality even discussed past season two?? Okay, maybe three, but seriously - it's a LESBIAN show, dude.
I think some men might have a hard time accepting the fact that the gorgeous women of "The L Word" wouldn't give him the time of day.

In other news - v. excited about possible L Word movie. Let's hope Ilene isn't bluffing.

I really hope there is a movie. I really feel like there is a lot of questions that were left unanswered and I would hope that all of the original cast members were in the show...I cant picture someone else playing any other characters part.

I think Dana should come back as a spirit guide to Alice and Alice and Tasha should get married and Carmen SHOULDNT come back but Shane should settle down. I think Bette should be outed as the person who killed Jenny but it's covered up well and it's seen as a suicide so no one goes to jail for it.

Now that I think about it, it would be really hard to make an Lword movie. Hmmm....what would it be about. If you put everything into perspective the show ended with a lot of questions left but i was very closed to where it would be kinda boring if you just spent two hours explaining all the questions. Maybe if the series was 12 episodes like it normally was that would have helped and a movie would have been perfect...either way I will watch it!

I really hope there is a L word movie. it would be great and it would answer the question on who killed jenny and if tina ever finds out about kelly. I would also like to see a tibette wedding. I think it might happen but we would have to see when the movie comes out.

I will really apreciate to see this movie..the tv show was very exciting, and for sure it will be much better if we can see Bette and Tina get married at NY and having another baby. It will be amazing and I think that is very important show to people that the really love can help the couple to superate their troubles. I really love TIBETTE. Jennifer and laurel are the best.

Shane and Molly need to get back together!! It'd be great to see Max finally have his sex change after having the baby. I hope Alice gets out of jail, I freaking love her. And if she's locked up would Tasha and what'sherface get together? She was an amazingly cute smart vegetarian but unless they can have a threesome relationship, Alice is better and deserves Tasha far more. I love them together as much as Dana and Alice.<3 I wanna see omens made between people like Angus and Kit and Carmen and Shane but I'm sure that's asking too much. Tina and Bette married would be precious as hell. I wonder how the story will pan out if it's partially in California and partially in NY... I can't wait!!

I hope that they do make The Lword in to a movie not only beacuse it would bring so much to the gay and lesbaun community but also because there is not enough exsposure of th etype of Woman who were in the Lword in our community on film, it would benifit the lesbian community and it would be a box office hit and a huge success because we have not had anything that is as posative and about womans lives in the gay community on film, and where the woman are beautiful, talented and who also have flaws, it would be a smash hit, to long have we seen on the screen stories that are mpstly about butch looking woman and the endings are often tragic on a whole, and while i know that the Lword series ended up with a tragety it fitted the story line rather well.
I am really hopeful that this is not the last we see of the Lword, i hope that it does get made into a movie , because it will be a real winner!

that was a twisted misrepresentation of the characters on the show. all of the characters mentioned may have been with men at some point in time, but at the end of the show they identified as lesbians, not bisexuals.
