spirit rocks sexy by bisexual musician Robin Renee: CD review

spirit.rocks.sexy is the kind of album you can listen to all day. Each song evokes a different mood and the album swings seamlessly from songwriter-pop to danceable rock to tabla-driven kirtan to bluesy girl & guitar. Robin Renee not only makes beautiful music but is a wordsmith and a poet.

My favorite songs: My Bride is a soulful, romantic ballad. It starts with Renee’s fantasy about what her dream woman would be like:

She speaks with all of her voice
Without compromises- She's full of surprises

And the beauty and power of their marriage ceremony:

At the end of the party, revealing ourselves
In the eyes of the state and the gods

Another verse fantasizes about a past love and what might have happened had their relationship worked out:

My Bride is wearing white
He loves tradition
But doesn't much care for the rules

I see the allure of his veil
And I embrace all of him-
Every embroidered detail

The Other End of the Line is a pensive, yet hopeful, pop song that evokes the hopes and insecurities of love, as well as desire for spiritual connection. Pennies and Perfume is a danceable rock & roll tune with lyrics that turn out to have deeper social and political meaning. Vanamali Hari is melodic, harmonic and hypnotic kirtan. Holy River is melodic mantra-pop. A song that reminds us spirituality is within us, not only in designated “holy” places. The harmonic chorus evokes a sense of inner peace.
