Parents who want their kids to be educated in both English/Spanish or English/Mandarin will now have a chance to do so in a public school setting - and they can find out more information tonight.
Approved by Denver Public Schools back in June, the Denver Language School is a Mandarin Chinese/Spanish K-8 charter school which will open in August 2010. Initially it will have 200 students in grades K-2 (100 kindergarten—50 Mandarin, 50 Spanish; 50 in each grade, first and second, classes of 25 in each target language.). DLS will add a grade a year. Through the total immersion process, DLS will make the target language both the medium of instruction and the object of instruction.
There will be a community information meeting tonight, Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009 betweeen 6:30 and 8 p.m. at Stapleton Foundation Offices, 7350 E. 29th Ave. #300 (29th and Quebec, south side, parking in the rear).
DLS is currently accepting admission applications for the 2010-2011 school year. Since the school will open in 2010 with K-2, children must be 5, 6 or 7 by 10/01/10. To enter the 2010 lottery for DLS, parents need to complete both sides of the admission application form and return it to Brian Weber, DLS Admission Application, 7350 E. 29th Ae. #300, Denver, CO, 80238; Fax: 303-393-6805; or admissions@denverlanguageschool.org.
DLS is led by Head of School Dr. Danielle Carrigo and was founded by parents Kristy Fantz and Camilla Modesitt, and community member Brian Weber. Denver Public Schools recommended DLS location is at 451 Newport St. -- former Whiteman Elementary School.
The complete DLS web site will be launched soon.
