Thanks to David Byrne, bicycle art goes mainstream

Mexican Pride (Vicente Olivares), Confites Lowrider Bike, 2008

The bulk of bicycle-related art exists at the fringes of the mainstream art world and only rarely makes it into the spotlight. Not so this month.  This weekend, the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, one of the nation's leading contemporary art museums, debuted an exhibition devoted entirely to the bike. The Aldrich describes the exhibit this way:

Organized by Aldrich curators Richard Klein and Mónica Ramírez–Montagut, with the advice of musician, artist, and bicycle advocate David Byrne, the exhibition explores the growing relevance of bicycles in contemporary art and culture.

The multidisciplinary project will feature approximately thirty works from around the world, including functional cycles—ranging from cutting–edge designs to populist expressions—as well as bicycle–inspired sculpture and video.

The full list of participating artists is here.  The exhibit will run until January 3rd.

Meanwhile, former Talking Heads front man David Byrne--who helped curate the Aldrich show--has been out front on all sorts of additional bike related projects.  He has a new book out, Bicycle Diaries, that's receiving attention from the Post, the Tribune, New York Magazine, the San Francisco Chronicle, and many more. And, as the clips below show, he's still racking up hits on You Tube for his helmet cam and artistic bike racks.
