The Christmas Day terrorist attack on Delta Flight 253 from Nigeria via Amsterdam's Schipol Airport to Detroit by a Nigerian national claiming Al Qaeda ties resulted in no direct injuries except to the suspected terrorist himself. Omar or Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab has been identified as a 23 year-old Nigerian national who apparently was attempting to blow himself up with a small explosive device, but only managed to set himself on fire. Other passengers and crew subdued the man, one of whom reportedly leapt over several rows of seats and restrained the suspected terrorist in a headlock.
The plane was just about to land in Detroit and continued on to make a normal landing. As a precaution emergency vehicles were standing by.All passengers were detained for special screening and interviews prior to continuing on with their travel plans.
Airports around the nation are expected to immediately increase security measures during one of the busiest travel times of the year.
How can you get through the security screening? We all know the recent drills about no liquids, but here are some more hints:
-Be alert for the latest announcements from TSA. As more information comes out about the device used in this attempted terrorist attack, you can be sure security screening will be beefed up for any item used in the attempted attack on Delta flight 253. Here is the TSA Website.
-Keep it simple. Do you need that item with you or can it go in your checked baggage? If you get pulled out for secondary screening, the fewer the items, the better.
-Allow extra time. How much? Contact your airline and/or the airport directly. They should be able to tell you how much time you'll need to allow. If you're on a domestic flight, I'd allow at least two hours, and three hours for international flights. For flights originating in Europe and Africa, especially in the Netherlands and Nigeria, expect for security to be especially thorough.
The Delta Flight 523 is referred to in some sources as Northwest Flight 253; it also codeshared with KLM (Royal Dutch Airlines) under Flight 6523.
