Bud Light Lime vs. Miller Chill beer tasting.

I don’t have time to go out and try every beer iteration that’s in the market, so up until today, I never had the opportunity to want to try lime flavored Bud Light Lime and Miller Chill. At a recent beer conference an iced tub of free beers was tempting me to try a few beers that  I am not likely to find myself wanting to pay for. I poured them in a glass to see what all the fuss has been about.   My thoughts:

Both beers certainly tasted close to the real thing – squeezing fresh lime juice into your light lager beer.   It’s something I have been known to do when faced with the limited option of drinking refreshing cold Mexican lager in Mexico or a restaurant not offering local choices.   The lime makes the refreshment a bit more interesting. It works, to the degree it attempts to add character.

Bud Light Lime seems to have a stronger lime impact.   It tastes close to fresh lime juice but begins to border on obvious added lime flavored extracts after a few sips.   The Miller Chill also does a good job of imitating real and fresh lime juice character. It had relatively less lime impact, but most certainly it doesn’t hide its pedigree. My personal preferences might be for a Bud Light Lime if I was going to have only one.   Miller Chill seems more balanced if I were to decide to have more than one. It’s a bit less satiating to the palate.

Then there’s the food experience.   With flavorful Mexican foods I might want the higher impact of Bud Light Lime.   Though the two are close enough I wouldn’t find myself arguing over one or the other if a choice had to be made.

I did the “drink straight out of the bottle test.” The sensation of flavors are subdued, though still come through. As the bottles warm up I drift towards Miller Chill. The higher impact of lime in the Bud gets negative with warming. Actually they both start to fall apart with warming.

I haven't had a chance to try these yet. Guess I'm waiting for a free bucket of them to appear as well.

My wife enjoys the occasional light lager, so I've had the opportunity to try both of these beers in a side by side tasting, similar to yours, Charlie. I tried them in a pilsner glass and out of the bottle. Your analysis is dead on with both, but I find myself favoring the BL Lime across the board.

For me, no American light lager tastes decent when warm, so I didn't even go there. Although I'm not a fan of the style, generally speaking, and I risk losing my "beer geek" credential if I admit that I like one of these beers, I did come to appreciate the BL Lime whilst on vacation in Florida this last June. I think it actually works decently as a lawnmower/poolside/picnic beer.

I won't pay money for these beers, but I'll drink one if the occasion lends itself to the style (or sub-style, I guess). I'm secure in my beer geekiness.

The Miller Chill is the only one of the two that is available here in Australia. Lion Nathan and Fosters are getting into the game as well, with so-called "radler" beers.

I tasted the Chill. Frankly I thought it was revolting. Sickly sweet.

Ian. Sounds like the Chill has been reformulated for the Australian market. Sweet was not at all part of my impression of the beer. Neither of these two beers begin to suggest "Radler," or a mix of lemondade/sprite and beer.

I went to buy Chill just because it "sounded" summery. They were sold out and BLL was sitting there. I enjoyed it as a "refreshment" beverage for summer. Cold and refreshing is what a summer beer should be to me. Not a malty, hoppy, slighty cool full bodied monster. BLL will be my summer choice, based on what I've now read about MChill.

I have tasted both of these and the Miller Chill is so discusting I don't know how any one can drink this crap. Bud light on the other hand is amazing. Just the right amount of lime and not to strong like miller chill.
