Philly Beer Week continues apace, but before it winds down on Sunday, a few local bars will be kicking off their World Cup festivities. While most of the soccer bars around town have tap lists that might be considered serviceable at best, a few committed craft beer bars will be open for every World Cup game.
As a rule, there are not that many occasions for which it's socially acceptable to enjoy a beer and a taco before 10 am (or, for some games, as early as 7.30 around these parts), the first game of this year's tournament is a perfect opportunity to enjoy Jose Pistolas always-tasty tacos and great beer lineup as Mexico takes on hosts South Africa on Friday morning (10 am in Philadelphia). They'll be open for every game - but for those who prefer a morning - or afternoon - pretzel and pilsner, Brauhaus Schmitz will also be ready to serve all your World Cup needs. A lucky fan will win a beer a day for the next year.
In the suburbs, the Iron Abbey will kick off their foosball tournament on Saturday, just in time for the US-England game that afternoon - but they will be open for every other game as well. Expect it to fill up for this game - as well as any involving Portugal, in keeping with their menu. Further beyond the city limits, The Whip Tavern may be an English-style pub, but they'll be supporting both national teams with specials - cheesesteaks and Yuengling for the US, Tetley with fish & chips for England.
But the usual suspects will all be offering World Cup specials as well (although, as noted above, with a less-diverse beer lineup - although there are typically at least one or two local craft options) - Sláinte, The Dark Horse, Tír na nÓg and Fadó will be open for most (if not all) games, usually with special breakfast and lunch menus for the earlier games - check with each venue for opening times.
We know American beer has come a long way over the past decade; the US national team finally has a chance to prove that they can shine on a world stage as well. It's only fitting to follow their progress with a great beer - no need to stick to macros!
