While there are hundreds of fabulous events scheduled all over the city (and surrounds) for Philly Beer Week, there are a few particular standouts – and a few that will require tickets to be purchased in advance. Here is a quick rundown of some particularly appealing events for the first weekend, with more to come next week.
June 3
Opening Tap will still be a day away, but the Iron Abbey is pre-gaming from 6 pm onward with brewer Brian O’Reilly from Sly Fox. Other local breweries, including Flying Fish, Dock Street, Stoudt’s and Twin Lakes will also be highlighted. And while we will revisit this topic in a future post, it’s worth noting that the bar will be showing all World Cup matches.
June 4
Yes, there’s Opening Tap, but there are some smaller events as well that are worth investigating. The Standard Tap will be introducing their own Standard Porter, anytime after 3 pm, while the Beneluxx Tasting Room will be featuring beers from Cambridge’s Pretty Things Brewing from 7 pm. Devil’s Den will team up with beer distributor Bella Vista to highlight beers from Cigar City, Voodoo, 12% Importers, The Bruery and quite a few more – the event runs from 7 pm – midnight.
June 5
Brauhaus Schmitz and the German Society of Pennsylvania join forces for a German Bierfest, held at the German Society’s biergarten. Families are welcome and there will be music, food, games and, of course, plenty of interesting German beer. Elsewhere, starting at 2 pm, there is the Beermuda Triangle Run, a 5K (ish) race taking in The Bishop’s Collar, St. Stephen’s Green and the Kite and Key. Teams should include In Pursuit of Ale and anyone else looking to get a little exercise in as part of Beer Week. Sign up online now.
June 6
McGillin’s Olde Ale House celebrates its sesquicentennial with the Budweiser Clydesdales on hand from 5-8 pm – but don’t expect the beer selection to be limited to A-B products. Local brewers including Stoudt’s and Victory will keep things humming along nicely, and the bar will be taking over Drury Street with music, dinner and an open bar included for $45. Contact McGillin’s to reserve a ticket.
