Philly Beer Week highlights: phase two

Philly Beer WeekWe're only a few short days away from Opening Tap for Philly Beer Week, and navigating the many events gets easier every day (even if it makes it even harder to make decisions about which to attend). The official website is ready for you to choose and save events, and the iPhone app does the same - in addition to letting you know what events are nearby or imminent.  Foobooz has mapped the route the Hammer of Glory will be taking on its journey to Opening Tap on Friday, and it includes details on how it will be transported - horses, kinetic sculptures and zip lines will all be involved.

As we previously looked at some of the first weekend's events, we'll now examine those taking place early in the week:

Monday, June 7
Beginning at 4 pm, TJ's hosts the Suburban Kickoff - brewers and other beer folk from 12% Imports, Stillwater, Cigar City, Dark Horse and more will be on hand in Paoli. The event is still easily accessible via public transit, with the R5 Paoli station just a short walk (or stumble, if sticking with the mostly-aptly-named 12% products) away.

Meanwhile, in the city from (at least, from 7 pm onward), Bell's Brewing takes over the City Tap House in a record-setting attempt - the most Bell's beers ever tapped at once, including many that rarely see the light of day. Among the highlights from the Michigan brewery are Batch 9000, Kal-Haven Rye Ale, Le Contrebassiste, Quinannan Falls, Smoked Lager, Black Note Bourbon Ale and more.

Tuesday, June 8
Lest we neglect our local favorites among so many choices from further afield, it's worth nothing that Victory will be showing off their new With Love Philadelphia XOXO's Summer Love Ale at the Standard Tap from 5-7 pm. Judging by the variety of beers they brewed for the recent Craft Brewers' Conference (many still available at the brewpub), the city should be in for a treat.

But we should welcome those from the left coast as well; Tomme Arthur of The Lost Abbey/Port Brewing will be stopping by Tria's Rittenhouse Square location from 4-6 pm - just after he finishes his sold-out barrel-aged beers class at Tria Fermentation School. No tickets are required for the meet-and-greet, so it's another chance to enjoy some great beers from California.

Going back to the local theme for a moment, Nodding Head will debuting a Mole-choc version of their Grog on cask, as well as two different Berliner Weisses. Tacos and a piñata will be part of the action, and homebrewers will be able to score some useful goodness from White Labs. The even runs from 4-6.30 pm.

Wednesday, June 9
Hawthorne's (subject of an upcoming review - full details to come after Beer Week, but it's quite positive) will have seven brewers in the house between 4.30-6.30 pm to talk saisons - The Bruery, St. Somewhere, Stillwater and a few real Belgians will be available to chat over their wares.

The Craft Beer Express will be running from 4-11 pm, taking in some of the city's best bars, and there is even more to do beyond. Brauhaus Schmitz (which is, indeed, a stop on the route) will be pouring some rare beers from Franconia from 3 pm  for all comers.
