Monk's Cafe may re-open today after weekend tragedy

The granddaddy of Philadelphia's craft beer bars, Monk's Café, will be most likely be closed for at least the next few days (and quite possibly longer) after a tragic accident over the weekend in which a young man was killed in a fall from the building's fire tower - and a woman remains in critical condition.  Tenants from the apartments above the bar were also forced from their homes until repairs are made - although there has not been any official word from the building's owners thus far on what the next steps will be, it would seem that their return will not be immediate either.

Contrary to some news reports, however, Monk's co-owner Tom Peters suggested that the bar could re-open as early as today or tomorrow (and had some good words to say about the landlord, although he is naturally quite saddened by the situation), but one expects that situation will remain quite fluid.  A brief phone call to the bar revealed that they are, indeed, hoping to open up later today - but whether they will get the go-ahead to do so remains to be seen, and a few more days with closed doors is not entirely unexpected.

Obviously, the business being closed for a longer or shorter time than anticipated pales in importance to what has happened; perhaps, given the loyalty of Monk's customers a benefit fund could be established to aid the victims and their families.

To clarify: the people fell from the fire escape of an apartment several floors above Monk's; Monk's itself (which leases its space in the building) had nothing to do with the accident. Just standing up for my Belgians.
