The U.S. Travel Association (USTA) recently sent a notice explaining that on the heels of a new Washington Post-ABC News poll, most Americans claim to be either "not too" or "not at all" worried about the swine flu hitting home. USTA goes on to explain that “broad majorities have confidence the government and local health providers will be able to effectively deal with an outbreak”. As top Administration officials today discussed guidelines that businesses can implement to curb the impact of the upcoming flu season, health officials suggested they do not expect the swine flu to be substantially different in the upcoming flu season than we saw in the spring, but combined with the regular seasonal flu, there could be more cases of flu in general.
According to Valerie Jarrett, a special assistant to the President, and Swineflu-precautions.com, the following precautions can aid in avoiding flu exposure, and should be taken by travelers in general:
1) Stay home if there are any reasons to believe you are sick.
2) Report any cases of Swine Flu to public health officials.
3) Wash hands often for at least 30 seconds before touching anything.
4) Of course, cover mouths when sneezing or coughing. Sneeze and cough into tissues, then discard them immediately. If tissues are not available, cough or sneeze into your arm, not hands.
It was also recommended for the first time that those ill with the flu should remain at home for 24 hours after the fever has subsided.
Yet, as we move toward fall and winter, all healthy travelers are encouraged to continue plans for travel. Bed and breakfasts are astute when it comes to cleanliness, and the health benefits of a B&B getaway far outweigh the risk of flu exposure. Don’t let the Swine Flu scare keep you from your next B&B getaway. Travel with precaution? Yes. Continue your plans to travel? Yes. Simply carry germ control and do stay home if you’re not feeling well.
