Beauty and The Belle: When did you start your line?
Tami Brooks: I started Tam Aura Designs in 2004
B.B.: How did you start designing jewelry? Are you formerly trained in jewelry design?
T.B.: I actually graduated with a degree in Computer Information Systems. I began taking evening classes in jewelry designs after a trip to London several years back. As I drooled over a fanatically, wonderful chunky ring that I personally felt “spiritually connected” too, of which my bank account wasn’t so connected too. I said to my self-“You’re a creative woman this is something you can learn”. It began small just making pieces for myself and learning the basic techniques and tools needed to make the kinds of things I like. As I wore my designs friends and strangers commented and wanted me to make pieces for them. So it grew very organically.
B.B.: You use elements that are not usually thought of being part of jewelry or being "beautiful". Why makes you drawn to incorporating these elements into your designs?
T.B.: I would have to say the use of concrete in my line is the most unique and unusual material. Its cool green grey tone is a perfect balance of color and form that appeals to men, but can be used in more delicate designs suited for women too.
B.B.: How are you inspired?
T.B.: I draw my inspiration for Tam Aura Designs from the basic architecture of nature and simple shapes. I seek to constantly create distinctive designs that spark interest and conversation. I often get from folks “wow, that’s a great ring, what kind of stone is that?” when I respond- concrete……….. it takes a moment to absorb . When asked, “Why concrete”? My answer “Why not concrete?”
B.B.: What are some of your featured looks for the fall line?
T.B.: I have been experimenting with Laser cut wood designs along with expanding my concrete collection to include cuff links and pendants.
B.B.: What are the future plans for your line?
T.B.: For Spring 2010 I am working with incorporating cork.
B.B.: Where can your pieces be purchased?
T.B.: My entire line is available on my website www.tamaura.com. I ship all over the world. Additionally, select pieces can be purchased here in the city at Kaight- an eco-friendly clothing and accessories store on the Lower East Side that specializes in smart and ethically conscious goods. www.kaightnyc.com
