New Orleans ends breast cancer awareness month with a bang

Cosmos for the Cure brings awareness to a disease with Cocktails, Cosmetics and Chocolates

On the eve of the last day of Breast Cancer Awareness month, two New Orleans budding entrepreneurs; Letitia Clark George of B Beauty Bar and Shanell "Mynnye" Shaw of Mynnye Chocolates, hosted an event to honor breast cancer survivors and to recognize breast cancer awareness month. Letitia and Mynnye met on facebook and connected to explore partnering opportunities. At their first meeting they come up with the idea "Cosmos for the Cure". They incorporated breast cancer awareness month with the services that they offered. "We wanted to advertise our business and do something positive for the community at the same time," said Letitia. Mynnye stated "It just made sense to do an event for Breast Cancer Survivors, now we are going to bring awareness to other diseases with Cosmos for the Cure".

This event was nothing short of delightful, catering to women's most coveted indulgences. Chocolate covered strawberries, makeovers, mar(tea)ni's and even a lesson from a certified pole and fitness instructor.  Although the event had so many fun elements, it was not absent of a very serious tone that centered around the issue of breast cancer. After enjoying free makeovers and chocolates, the ladies listened intensively to breast cancer survivor stories. One testimony was from a woman presently going through chemotherapy and under her cute hat was a completely bald head. The ladies were also serenaded by a young talent "Omar" who sung a gospel tribute of encouragement and inspiration. After the testimonials and song, needless to say, many women were in tears. The realization of how close this disease has impacted our communities and our families resonated loud and clear with the ladies.

Guests at the event received free literature about breast cancer, how and when women should check their breasts and how often women should get a professional breast examination from their doctor. Guests also received free breast cancer rings and charms and a CD of the music played during the event. The ladies that compiled the guest list at this event were truly the who's who of New Orleans; business owners, executives and community leaders. Two women running for City Council District E , Jerrelda Drummer Sanders and Cindy Nguyen announced their candidacy and discussed how breast cancer impacted their lives in some way at the event.

The ambiance was intimate and chic with floating candles in large martini glasses and jazz decor all over the walls, courtesy of Jazz City Java Coffeehouse,  a new coffeehouse located at 5555 Bullard Ave. The staff at Jazz City Java stayed for the entire event and offered their coffee and pastry services to all of the guests. This event was one to remember. Letitia and Mynnye plan to host another Cosmos for the Cure event in the beginning of 2010 to bring awareness to either Diabetes or AIDS.
