Self tanners, whether you call them fake bakes or liqua color, we've all used them. Running around with streaks and smelling like moldy bread, but I guess that's the price we have to pay to look tan.
So why do self tanners smell so bad? It's the chemical reaction taking place between your skin and the key ingredient in sunless tanners — dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which of course gives you that "tan" color. Some companies have tried to mask the smell by adding essential oils but not to the point in which it makes that much of a difference. There is nothing worse than being able to smell the tanner on yourself and if you sweat it makes it doubly disgusting. I mean if you can smell "yourself" you know others can! You just hope they realize it's self tanner and not self "neglect" i.e. not showering for days!! Most of the time however after a few showers the smell disappears, of course by then the crap starts to fade off and you have to reapply, so really you're no better off!!! So I guess in an effort to protect our skin from looking like an old catchers mitt several years from now we just accept the fact that hey, we're gonna smell, but we sure do look good and in the grand scheme of things it's not how you smell but if you look good smelly.........right?
