Celebrity hair stylist Dean Banowetz says it’s easy to give your hair extreme volume and height, like the look Gwen Stefani is rocking here. He says this look was all over the fall runways and offers these step-by-step directions to banish limp looking hair.
- Start by towel drying hair.
- Spray a firming hair spray, like Tres Milano Firm Up Spray, to the crown and roots to give you a strong foundation for the volume.
- Blow dry hair upward using a paddle brush – try flipping your head upside down as you blow dry.
- To get “mind blowing fullness,” he recommends using a pro trick called the "overdirecting technique" with a heat styling tool, like the InStyler (see my review of it here). He demonstrates the technique in the video below. I've tried this and it really works like a charm.
- Finish with firming spray to set the style.

Woah! That is "mind-blowingly" full! I adore. :)
Mira, me, too! I need to start pumping up the volume with my hair but I'm usually too lazy. :)
what about us curly girls?? We have volume, but no style. it's boring. But Gwen's always gorgeous.
adna4f, you should check out the book Curly Girl. It's an awesome look at embracing curly style with cool style tips. I don't even have curly hair but loved reading it.
That InStyler is NOT all it's cracked up to be! Caution- Everyone wait until it comes out in the stores before you buy one-if you must. That way you'll save some money purchasing it, as well as saving on the return as you can just take it back to the store you bought it in.
It always looks easy when someone is standing behind you or on the side demonstrating how to use the device, but it is not as easy as it looks. Don't be fooled! Happy Hair!
