"Untitled" by Jim Dine sold for auction this week at Bonhams
& Butterfields in Los Angeles. (Bonhams & Butterfields)
"Untitled," a collection of five pieces of artwork by pop artist Jim Dine that was said to be intended for a previously unknown Capitol Records album project involving the Beatles, sold in Los Angeles for $51,850, the auction house Bonhams & Butterfields reported Wednesday. Information on the buyer was not available.
The artwork was lot #1118 in Sale #17529 in the category of "Modern, Contemporary and Latin American Art." The auction held Nov. 17 in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
As we reported previously, neither a prominent Beatles historian nor representatives of Capitol Records we contacted had ever heard of the project the artwork was designated for before news of the auction was announced.

LOL... 50K for that??? PT Barnum said it best... There's one born every second
Maybe a toothpaste company bought it for use in a commercial? Maybe they will use Good Day Sunshine/Here Comes the Sun as the song while someone uses the Paul or George toothbrush?
Otherwise I fear for the buyer's sanity - unless of course Jim Dine's work is worth that much. I don't see the skill though. It looks like a still life from a middle school art class.
50k? No way. C'mon...The story is that Dine HOPED the Beatles would use his so called untitled artwork for an album cover some day, although he never discussed it with them...his working title for his untitled piece was...Crap.
Art???? Looks like crap to me!
So Steve, where are you going to hang your new art work? :-) J/K
Man, I don't think The Beatles would be interested in using that kind of lame-ass artwork on their albums or even in the inner sleeve. Imagine being given the chance to design a BEATLES ALBUM COVER, but all this Dine guy could come up with is a bunch of freaking toothbrushes?!?!?! What a dullard! The guy who did the Magical Mystery Tour comic did WAY better than this.
Jimbo said it best, there is a sucker is born every second.
What a piece of crap, unbelieveable how bad it really is.
Damn! Outbid in the last few seconds by $10.00. Nobody told me there'd be days like these.
Chris
If, by some freakish twist of fate, this had actually appeared on a Beatles album, I'm sure it would have become a regular fixture on 'Worst Album Sleeves Of All Time' lists. It's just unbelievably p!ss-poor. But not as unbelieveable as some rich sucker forking out over 50 G's for it. DOH!
"Maybe they will use Good Day Sunshine/Here Comes the Sun as the song while someone uses the Paul or George toothbrush?"
Savoy Truffle would be an appropriate choice...
