Ringo Starr: 'No conclusion' yet to iTunes wrangle

In the current issue of Rolling Stone (pictured, with John Mayer on the cover), Ringo Starr tells writer Neil Strauss the Beatles and Apple are still tussling over getting the Beatles to iTunes.

"Well, the iTunes thing is, you know, a three-way situation. And the Beatles are interested in it, as well as Apple, but there is no conclusion yet," he says.

Starr reveals the vocals in the song "Peace Dream," a tribute to John Lennon, were intentionally patterned after those in John Lennon's "Imagine." "It would have been awkward if you'd (Strauss) have done it," he explains, "but it was easier for me because I knew the man."

He also tells Strauss he's just a musician at heart. "I joined bands because I wanted to play with good players. That's all I ever wanted to do," he says. "Of course, the band I ended up in (was) really great, but it went a bit crazy."

Hmmm. Guess Ringo didn't quite have the physique or maybe enough tatoos to make the cover?

Another thing to note in this issue of Rolling Stone: There's an article about Spoon and the band is pictured with a copy of Paul's "Ram" album perched on the sofa with them. The review of Spoon's new album talked about how they sound like they were influenced both by early McCartney solo work and early Lennon solo work. If so, it's good to see young musicians and even a few critics FINALLY waking up to the beauty that is "Ram."

Lookin' good, John Mayer! Really good - but where am I? Oh yeah, musician's names on the cover:

    John Mayer
    Vampire Weekend
    Spoon
    Taylor Swift
    Ringo Starr

Ok, kids, can YOU guess which one of these names has had a recording career for longer than 10 years? Here's a hint. It's the one in whose article the "writer" states that Y Not is more for Ringo fans than general music fans.

Oh yes, on page 18, it's mentioned that the remastered Beatles catalog sold 3.2 million units in the US in four months, with Abbey Road the toppermost, selling 411,000 copies! Go Beatles!

And as someone mentioned here earlier, the United World Chart had Abbey Road as the #39-selling worldwide album for '09 with 1,300,000 copies. Toppermost of the poppermost indeed! Needless to say, none of the rest of the Worldwide Top 40 albums were 40 years old! Have I made my point? Can I get a Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!?

(Did I mention John Mayer can melt butter just by staring at it?)

Ringo says the iTunes bit is a 3-way situation, and the Beatles and Apple are interested. Last year Paul said it was a disagreement between the Beatles and EMI. EMI has leeched sou much money from the Beatles and has been so poorly managed that it's been propped up from outside interests for the last few years. EMI, you screwed the Beatles in their first contract. Would you rather go under or be taken over by Bertelsman Group than let the Beatles have their way and still reap billions from it?
