Ravi Shankar begins archival reissue project with 'Nine Decades, Vol. 1'

Ravi Shankar has embarked on a huge archival project with a series of discs with unreleased recordings hand-picked by Shankar himself.

The first in the series, a single disc CD titled "Nine Decades, Vol. 1: 1967-1968," begins with "Raga Gangeshwari," recorded live on the banks of the Ganges River outside Allahabad, India in 1968, with his musical partner Alla Rahka on tabla. Also on the disc is "West Meets East circa 1967" and "Durga Suktam & Mahishasura Mardini Stotram," recorded live in 1968.

The disc has released by East Meets West Music, the official label of the Ravi Shankar Foundation. The next release in the series, the soundtrack to the movie "Raga," which originally was issued on Apple Records and featured George Harrison, will be out in the fall on both CD and DVD.

I hope Olivia and Dhani allow Ravi to re-release his two Dark Horse albums.

Dave, I feel sure "The Shankar Family and Friends" and "Ravi Shankar's Music Festival From India" will be released. Since Olivia, Dhani, and Apple Corps are allowing the "Raga" cd and dvd to be released on Ravi's East Meets West label, it should be no problem. Parts of Ravi's 2 Dark Horse lps were included in a 4-cd Ravi set in the late 90s or early 2000s. If Ravi's series is comprehensive, the Apple Corps lp/cd "In Concert 1972" and e.p. "Joi Bangla" will no doubt be part of the series as well.
